Welcome back to Jasper Jams! Now that we’re back in the groove of the semester, it’s time to get groovy again.
Whether you spent all summer working at a really cool internship or a minimum wage job, travelling the globe or just heading to the beach close to your house, the music of this summer was unavoidable.
If you liked hearing Selena Gomez, Drake, Maroon 5, Cardi B and the likes all of the time, then maybe you didn’t mind how those same ten songs were everywhere; however, if you’re like me and you have a limited tolerance for repeated tunes, you probably turned to your aux cord.
This playlist is the songs of my summer: the songs I played on a continuous loop and jammed out to on my way to work, while hanging out with my friends, in the car on the way to the beach and everywhere in between.
Youngblood – 5 Seconds of Summer
While this song has been played on the radio a few times, it wasn’t played nearly enough for me. I’ve listened to it a bunch of times and I’m still not sure what the lyrics are but the song is a good one to blast really loudly.
Ride Or Die – The Knocks feat. Foster The People
I first heard this song on the fairly new alternative station, which became the only radio station I actually listened to this summer. It was one of the first times the song was getting radio play so I felt like I was being let in on some little secret.
Brooklyn In The Summer – Aloe Blacc
Most people will recognize Blacc’s voice from Avicii’s hit song “Wake Me Up” but Blacc was not credited as a feature on the version of the song that topped charts. His super smooth voice contrasting with the duple beat in the background is a striking contrast.
Chasing Fire – Lauv
Lauv knows what he’s doing when it comes to making songs that people love. With his “release songs as he writes them” and “playlist album” approach, he creates an open connection with his listeners. On a personal note, I love his lyrics.
Oceans – Coasts
I first heard this song on Red Band Society, a TV show that centered around teens in a hospital that also had Octavia Spencer in it and got canceled after one season. I loved this song since then but this summer, I definitely listened to it more than I had in a few years.
Girls Like Me – Will Joseph Cook
My best friend from high school recommended the song to me because she thought I’d like it; knowing me as well as she does, she was very right in recommending it. The music video radiates positive energy and is pretty sweet.
Crush – Tessa Violet
This song definitely has a different vibe than what most consider to be summer songs but after I first heard it, it was stuck in my head endlessly for days. With such a chill vibe and unfortunately relatable lyrics, the song made my summer playlist.
Ticking – Freedom Fry
Someone had originally recommended another Freedom Fry song to me that I wasn’t a huge fan of, but I decided to check out their other songs. I’m happy that I gave their other songs a listen because this is one of my favorite songs at the moment and I almost never listened to it.
Carried Away – Overstreet
To me, this song sounds exactly how summer feels. Listening transports me to the driver’s seat of my dad’s 2004 Subaru Forester with the windows down, driving on the highway singing at the top of my lungs.
