Women’s Volleyball

The Manhattan University (MU) women’s volleyball team defeated the Iona University Gaels with a final score of 3-2 this past Tuesday, Oct. 27.

The game started off shaky for the Jaspers, with Iona taking the lead early on and capturing the first set with a score of 25-22. The women’s team fought hard but the second set ended similarly, with the Gaels capturing the first ten points of the match and defeating the Jaspers following a service ace from Iona.

After the two-set defeat, the Jaspers entered the third set with kills from senior middle blocker Abby Morreale and senior outside hitter Katie Powers, claiming the first two points of the match. The Jaspers continued their streak with five consecutive points for MU, adding on points until doubling Iona’s score, 20-10. The third set ended with a final point from Morreale to top things off.

The fourth set of the game began with back-to-back service aces from sophomore outside hitter Emma Francesconi, starting the Jaspers off with a 5-1 lead almost immediately. The Jasper blockers barely let anything from Iona past the net during the game, rising to a score of 23-14, before a service ace from junior setter Ori Briger ended the match and called for a deciding fifth round.

The fifth round started with an ace for the Gaels, but Powers was quick to respond and scored the next three points for the lead. The Jaspers continued taking charge, forcing a timeout from Iona upon reaching a score of 7-3. Iona and MU were quick to respond to each other throughout the next few points, reaching a neck and neck score of 9-8 for the Jaspers. MU pulled through, and Powers’ 15th kill of the evening was enough to wrap the game up for MU. Powers led the team in kills for the game – her third time reaching this milestone during the year 2026.

The Jaspers continue their fall schedule on Friday, Oct. 30 with a home game against Marist University in Draddy Gymnasium, followed by a game in-costume on Halloween, Saturday, Oct. 31.

*Editor’s note: The Jaspers fell to the Marist Red Foxes with a final score of 1-3; Siena University beat MU on Oct. 31 in a score of 0-3.

Men’s Soccer

The MU men’s soccer team suffered an unfortunate defeat against the Sacred Heart University Pioneers this past Wednesday, Oct. 28 in Gaelic Park.

Following a conference loss from Merrimack the previous Saturday, the Jaspers started the game off hungry, attempting a goal just two minutes into play time. The attempt was blocked by the Big Red, and they followed up with a successful goal on target shortly after.

MU faced a yellow-card penalty in the 18-yard box for freshman goalkeeper Philip Isaksson, calling for a penalty kick from Sacred Heart and raising their lead to 2-0. A few additional attempts from the Jaspers followed, but to no avail.

Pioneer Brady Poor made the third and final goal for Sacred Heart in the 38th minute, securing the game for Sacred Heart within the first period. The second period saw little action apart from various attempted goals from both teams, all blocked out. The end of period two cemented the final score of 3-0 for the teams.

The MU men’s soccer team will continue their conference play on Saturday, Oct. 31 against the Marist University Red Foxes.
