April 3, 2025
To the Manhattan University Community,
It is with profound sadness that I share the news of the passing of one of our students, Aaron Schoepf. Our collective hearts go out to his family, friends, and classmates, as well as our faculty and staff as we all cope with our grief.
Aaron was a vibrant member of the University community. A talented and passionate student artist, he passed away on Thursday, April 3 at the age of 21. Aaron was a rising senior studying English with a concentration in creative writing and double minors in Music and Theater. He was active in the Performing Arts, Pride Center, and Student Life. Aaron’s young life will leave a legacy of creativity and artistry.
On a personal note and as a parent, I share in your heartbreak. My priorities always are to assist in the safety and well-being of all our students – both physical and mental. At a time like this we are most called to draw together as a close-knit community of Lasallians. As we process this painful experience, I encourage our Manhattan community to take advantage of our counseling services and Campus Ministry. Today the Counseling Center and Campus Ministry are hosting a space for students to gather and honor Aaron in the Horan Hall meditation room (lobby floor) from 5:30-6:30 pm.
Additionally, the Counseling Center will have extended open drop-in hours available immediately (Miguel Hall, Room 501) for students to meet with a counselor. You can also make an appointment with Counseling by simply reaching out to Julie Egan at jegan01@manhattan.edu or (718) 862-7394. The Counseling Center (Miguel Hall, Room 501) will host a Grief Support group focused on the passing of Aaron on Wednesday, April 9 from 12:00-1:00 pm. Employees may also access counseling through the Employee Assistance Program at (855) 775-4357.
Campus Ministry is also available for drop-in hours in Cornerstone (Miguel 209). Members of the community should feel free to see Fr. Robert Joerger and Fr. Edward Beck and members of the Brother’s community.
We will also gather tomorrow, Friday, April 4 at 12:00-1:00 pm for a prayer service to pray for Aaron and his family in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers. Details on a Memorial Service to honor Aaron’s life will be shared at a later date.
The unity of our tight-knit campus brings with it strength and support in this time of sorrow.
